Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions
(Urinary Incontinence & Vaginal Prolapse)
Treatments for Difficult, Embarrassing, and Surprisingly Common Issues

Quite common in our aging society, pelvic floor dysfunctions include pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and fecal incontinence. More than half of older women experience one or more of these issues, and more than a third undergo surgery as an attempt to correct the problem.

The effects of pelvic dysfunctions are multifold: women often suffer deep emotional and psychological distress, lower quality of life, embarrassment, and economic burdens due to treatment and lifestyle changes.

Women Care Providers can help with pelvic floor dysfunctions. We understand the impact of these issues – from the medical implications to how they affect your daily life. We can assess your specific problem and develop a treatment strategy that is appropriate for your individual situation.

Urinary Incontinence
After a thorough history and physical examination, Women Care Providers provides an office urodynamic evaluation where we fill the bladder to simulate everyday activities that induce leakage of urine. Leakage of urine can have multiple causes: stress induced by coughing, laughing, exercise, or sneezing, overflow from a full bladder, or spontaneous factors. Determining the cause of the leakage helps us formulate a personalized treatment plan for you.

Treatment options include:

  • Drug Therapy
  • - For those who suffer from frequency or urge incontinence
  • Sling Procedures (surgery)
  • - Sling procedures offer superior results to traditional bladder repair (85% cure rate vs. 25% for bladder repair).
    - The surgery is performed under general or spinal anesthesia and entails a small incision in both groins and inside the vagina below the bladder. Through one groin incision, a specially designed needle is placed and a synthetic mesh is threaded through opening and under the urethra (the tube that drains the bladder). This creates a “hammock” or “sling” apparatus.
    - This “sling” now suspends the bladder, thus adding support and stability to the urethra.Bladder control is experienced almost immediately and the procedure has an 85% cure rate.
Vaginal Prolapse

Vaginal prolapse can be an extremely upsetting and uncomfortable. The problem typically arises from fallout of the bladder, vagina, rectum, or combination thereof. The degree of the prolapse also can vary from mild relaxation to complete prolapse where the organs are protruding externally out of the vagina.

Traditional Approach

Traditional surgery included the removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) with possibly vaginal repair for the bladder and rectum. These surgeries were invasive, required a long operating time of two to three hours, involved increased complications such as bleeding and inability to urinate, and resulted in a prolonged recovery time of six to eight weeks.

A Better Alternative

Women Care Providers provides minimally invasive surgery for vaginal prolapse. Our procedure involves general or spinal anesthesia and utilizes synthetic mesh to suspend the vaginal vault. With this technique, any combination of prolapse can be easily fixed concurrently, operating time is typically under one hour, fewer complications arise with reduced risk of bleeding or injury to other pelvic structures, and recovery time can be as little as one to two weeks. Furthermore, with this procedure, patients can avoid a hysterectomy.
